Cannabis in Thailand for tourists in 2026: practical guide

Cannabis in Thailand travel guide for tourists in 2026

Thailand can feel confusing because old articles still describe the first decriminalisation period while current policy is medical and controlled. A visitor does not need to memorise every regulation, but should know where the risks begin: unverified supply, missing medical documentation, public smoking, impaired driving and international travel.

Before your trip

  • Read current Thai official sources, not an old travel post
  • Understand the medical assessment and prescription process
  • Check hotel rules before any use
  • Plan to leave all cannabis products in Thailand

Before obtaining cannabis

Use a medical pathway

Cannabis flower is treated as a controlled herb. A qualified professional evaluates the patient and documents the appropriate use and quantity. A product menu is not a diagnosis.

Verify the establishment

Do not judge legitimacy only by a neon sign, social profile or tourist review. Ask how the medical assessment, prescription and patient identification are handled.

At the consultation

Bring a passport or accepted ID and disclose diagnoses, medicines, allergies and previous adverse reactions. Ask about THC, amount, route, interactions and when to seek help. A responsible appointment can end without a prescription.

Reading the product

Label before strain story

Check the actual format, THC/CBD information, quantity and packaging. A famous strain name cannot guarantee one response, and two batches may differ.

Start conservatively

Follow the professional instruction. Do not combine with alcohol, do not add more because the effect feels slow, and stop if the response is uncomfortable.

Hotels, beaches and public space

Do not smoke in hotel common areas, streets, beaches, restaurants or where odour affects others. Ask the hotel about its private-property policy. Keep products sealed and locked away from children, visitors and housekeeping access.

Getting around Phuket and Thailand

Driving

Never drive a car or scooter while impaired. Tropical rain, unfamiliar roads and night traffic already raise the risk.

Domestic travel

Before any domestic flight or ferry, check current carrier and authority rules. Do not assume a prescription removes every transport restriction.

International borders

Do not take flower, edibles, oils or extracts out of Thailand. Destination legality does not cancel Thai export rules, airline policy or transit-country law.

A simple departure checklist

  1. Dispose of or lawfully leave all cannabis products before the airport.
  2. Check every pocket, bag and toiletry case.
  3. Do not pack grinders, containers or edibles with residue.
  4. Keep medical documents, but never treat them as an export permit.

Where to check changes

Use the 2025 DTAM controlled-cannabis notice and the Division of Medical Cannabis 2026 update. Note the date you checked because rules and implementation can change.

Frequently asked questions

Is cannabis recreationally legal for tourists?

No. Current official policy centres controlled medical use.

Can my hotel allow smoking?

Ask the property, but its permission cannot override public-health or other legal restrictions.

Can I fly home with a prescription?

No. A Thai prescription is not an international export or import permit.
